A Local Government Information Unit report shows that Labour, rather than abolishing the "quango state", has made executive quangos more central to the government of England and Wales. The government is using the unelected bodies to drive forward most policy initiatives, such as those in health, housing, homelessness and education. The number of advisory quangos has fallen, from 610 to 544 whereas the number of executive quangos has remained around the same, at about 300.
