Sir John Stevens, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner has warned that inner-city policing is in crisis, with not enough officers to keep the streets safe. Efforts to recruit and retain police officers have been severely hampered by the damage done to the force's image by the Macpherson report on the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
