Last minute attempts by EU ministers to salvage stalled climate change discussions are "over until Bush arrives".

Deputy prime minister, John Prescott, said the attempt was worth a "last throw" before the new administration takes over in Washington but held out hopes that George W Bush might be more receptive to climate change measures than previously thought, noting that the president-elect's father was "very much to the fore" at previous "earth summits".
