Philip Morris and R J Reynolds are being sued in a New York court for their alleged part in the smuggling of tobacco into the EU. Under the US racketeering and corruption legislation the EU can claim three times the amount of lost revenue from unpaid customs dues and VAT. The claims were denied by the companies.
