The Equal Opportunities Commission announced yesterday that it was backing the cases of Jane Coker and Martha Osamor against the lord chancellor, Lord Irvine, over the appointment of his special adviser. The post was not advertised and went to a friend of the lord chancellor. The case has implications for the whole system of special advisers in Whitehall.
