TUC damn and are damned on racism
The TGWU's Bill Morris blasted the government in an emotional speech to the congress. He accused ministers of fostering racist attacks and demanded that the asylum seeker voucher system be scrapped. Mr Morris intends to force a vote on the issue at the forthcoming Labour conference in a move that could deeply embarrass the government. At a conference fringe meeting the Commission for Racial Equality's chairman, Gurbux Singh has warned trade unions that if they fail to make progress on workplace equality they could be prosecuted. Mr Singh said that several unions were failing to promote the recruitment of ethnic minorities and could be prosecuted under the Race Relations Act.
