David raises the roof, and the bar

    By Ned Simons
    - 27th September 2010

Stepping up the podium this morning, David Miliband said he was not going to deliver the speech he had earmarked for the leader's address titled Tuesday, version 23 that he had sitting on his computer.

Yet as he got into his stride it became increasingly clear that he was largely doing just that. This was a leader's rallying cry, probably the best speech he has ever given and to thunderous applause in the hall.

While he called for the party to unite behind his brother, if anything he will have just deepened the gloom of those who wanted him to be king and sewed regret among those who thought they didn't.

David has just raised the bar extraordinarily high; Ed supporters must be hoping the new leader has a file on his computer titled Tuesday, version 24.
