Ukip delegates meet as leader hunt starts

Members of the UK Independence Party are meeting for their autumn conference in Torquay, as Former leader Nigel Farage confirms he will stand for leader.

Lord Pearson of Rannoch announced a fortnight ago he would stand down as leader at the conference, less than a year after taking the post.

Former Ukip leader Jeffrey Titford has been chosen as an interim leader until a permanent replacement is elected.

A new party leader will be appointed following a full-fledged election later this year.

Former leader Nigel Farage has confirmed that he will seek re-election to the post.

The high profile Ukip MEP led the party before standing down to contest the Buckingham seat in the general election, held by Commons Speaker John Bercow.

He was ultimately unsuccessful in his attempt, securing only 8,401 votes compared to Bercow's 22,860.

Farage suffered serious injures when his plane crashed in the constituency on polling day.

As the conference got under way, Titford said the party was drawing a wide range of support, not just from disaffected Conservatives.

He said he was convinced the party would continue to build on existing support and that it will eventually win a seat at Westminster.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Titford said: "We will get there in the end, don't you worry.

"I think we draw from all areas of the political spectrum. Three of our policies have been taken up by the three political parties, so it must be we are getting something right in our manifesto."
