Ed Miliband and his partner have announced the birth of their second child.

The leader of the Labour party and partner Justine Thornton welcomed the 8lb 3oz arrival last night, according to a party spokesman.

The baby boy was born at University College Hospital in London, and mother and baby are said to be doing well.

The spokesman said: "Ed and Justine are overjoyed at the birth of their second child and can't wait to introduce the new arrival to his big brother, Daniel.

"Both are keen to pass on their thanks to the NHS staff at the hospital."

Miliband is now taking paternity leave and will return to work in two weeks.

His duties will be covered by deputy party leader Harriet Harman.

The Labour leader is expected to ensure he is named on this child's birth certificate, having admitted in September that he was "embarrassed" to have forgotten to register on 18-month-old Daniel's records.

"I am going to make sure I do two for the price of one," he joked recently.

Miliband said the new addition to the family was "gorgeous".

Responding to well-wishers via Twitter, he said: "Thanks for all the good wishes. He's gorgeous. Mum and baby doing great."
