CBI backs apprenticeship boost

23rd August 2009

The CBI has called for a £125m boost in funding for apprenticeships.

In a proposal published on Monday, the business organisation said the cash could come from the government's £500m recruitment subsidy fund.

Warning that youth unemployment is reaching unacceptable levels, the CBI said the £125m could subsidise 50,000 new apprenticeships.

Richard Lambert, CBI director general, said: "Young people leaving education this summer face the toughest job market in a generation.

"We know from previous recessions that a lack of employment after leaving education can damage young peoples' long-term prospects at a critical point as they move from education to the world of work.

"Young people are being hardest hit by unemployment, and the government must increase the opportunities available to limit its scarring effects.

"Business also needs to support young people by offering more apprenticeships, internships, work experience and mentoring opportunities."

Other proposals from the CBI, outlined ahead of this week's publication of GCSE results, include encouraging universities to offer additional practical sessions on helping students get a job or start a business.

Firms should also offer internships and encourage staff to mentor young people, it was suggested.
