Academies bill begins legislative journey

2nd June 2010

Two government bills have received their first reading in the House of Lords.

The academies bill will have its second reading - a general debate on the measures proposed - in the Upper House on June 7.

It aims to enable more schools to become academies and give them "the freedoms and flexibilities they need to continue to drive up standards".

The bill removes the requirement to consult the local authority before opening an academy and ensures there is no expansion of selection, while enabling grammar schools and other schools which select or partially select pupils to continue to do so.

The local government bill was also introduced last week and will receive its second reading in the Lords on June 8.

It will overturn structural change orders approved by the last government that established Exeter and Norwich as unitary councils from April 2010 and prevents the implementation of the Suffolk unitary proposals that remain outstanding.

Seven private member's bill have also had their first reading in the Lords.

They are:

* Building regulations (review) bill
* Contaminated blood (support for infected and bereaved persons) bill
* Defamation bill
* Dog control bill
* House of Lords reform bill
* Marine navigation aids bill
* Re-export controls bill

Dates for second reading of the private members' bills have yet to been scheduled.
