Model Home 2020

VELUX have devised a strategy to take an active part in developing sustainable buildings. Part of this strategy is the project Model Home 2020 – our vision for how we should construct future buildings that reflect the balance between energy design and living factor, underpinned by the Active house model and principles.

Our philosophy is that one experiment is worth more than a thousand expert assumptions

We are not claiming to hold all the answers but we believe it is our responsibility as part of the building industry that we seek out possible solutions to the climate challenge. Within the industry there have been many claims of definite solutions which have yet to stand up to the criticisms when analysed as a real life home suitable for mass building. We believe it is important to experiment to determine the solutions that will shape future buildings, not as a one off concept home but something that meets the demands of mass house building and mass consumer demand.

We believe that the vision and principles behind Model Home 2020 need to be developed and tested. To achieve this we will build six experiments over the next two years. As the climate challenge is not a unique UK problem we can utilise our strong position in Europe and build homes in Denmark, Germany, France and the UK. This will allow us to experiment with the Active house and Sustainable Living principles in different cultural, climatic and architectural conditions.
