Teacher Training in vocational education inquiry launch

Chaired by Sir Mike Tomlinson, ex-chief inspector of Ofsted, the Skills Commission is launching its 'Teacher Training in Vocational Education' inquiry findings. The final report will be launched at the House of Commons at 1pm on Tuesday 23rd February 2010.

The inquiry examined initial teacher training and continuing professional development for teachers of vocational education in schools, further education and higher education. A key question driving the Inquiry was whether there is a mismatch between teacher training and the education system as it is evolving. The Inquiry also investigated the inequality between teachers of academic subjects in schools and teachers of vocational subjects in further education – a reflection of the divide between academic and vocational education more widely.

The Skills Commission commenced the inquiry in September 2009 and the report is sponsored by edge, the leading educational charity dedicated to raising the profile of vocational education.

Speakers are set to include:

Sir Mike Tomlinson, Chair of the Inquiry, former Chief Inspector of Schools and Chair of the Working Group on 14-19 Reform.

Iain Wright MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for 14-19 Reform and Apprenticeships

Dame Ruth Silver, Co-Chair of the Skills Commission, Chair of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service and Chair of the Careers Profession Taskforce

David Laws MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Children

John Hayes MP, Conservative Shadow Minister for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education
