Stand and Deliver

Is Government finally delivering for children leaving care? In 2008 The Children and Young Persons Act became law. The Act aims to extend transitions and give many care leavers the level of support they need to make their way into adult life. It does recognise, as National Care Leavers’ Week has been demanding for many years, that leaving care is a transitional phase that for most young people requires access to some additional support until the age of 25, not a single event that takes place at 16, 17 or 18. In National Care Leavers’ Week 2009 emerging good practice and new levels of support will be highlighted. Questions will also be asked about whether too many groups of vulnerable care leavers will fail to benefit from new provisions.
