Legal aid facts and figures
We help around 2 million people get help with their legal problems each year. You can read more about the LSC's work in our annual report. Our Annual Report 2006/7 is available on the LSC website.
Civil legal aid
Each year, we help:
- over 250,000 people involved in family disputes
- over 90,000 people struggling with debt
- around 125,000 people with their housing problems
- around 18,000 people suffering domestic violence
- over 90,000 people get the welfare benefits they are entitled to.
Last year our Community Legal Advice helpline provided help and advice to over 250,000 people.
Criminal legal aid
- Our funded duty solicitors and CDS Direct service gave legal advice to people being held at police stations on more than 750,000 occasions last year.
- Our funding ensures representation for the people involved in more than 560,000 Magistrates’ Court appearances each year.
