About us
About us
GMB protects people at work. We do so by representing them with their employers and by influencing government decisions and public debate. The GMB fights for fairness at work, wherever possible in partnership with responsible employers.
The GMB infrastructure of support for members is extensive:
- Over 25,000 stewards and staff representatives in workplaces and in union branches. So members can get help easily and quickly.
- Over 250 full time officers around the regions and at national level. So professional assistance is close by.
- Dozens of regional and local offices nationwide to keep the union close to its members. So we remain alert to problems and opportunities, and can respond rapidly.
- A sectional structure to encourage industrial focus. So union officers know the business conditions where their members work and can root their advice in reality.
- Specialist backup staff to offer expert legal, equalities, health & safety, work organisation and pensions support. So the union can suggest serious solutions, not spurious ones.
- The GMB policy and research team to provide information and ideas, analysis and advice, based on best practice. So that solving problems stays the focus of employment relations.
- The GMB National College in Manchester plus regional education services to train GMB representatives (and their employers in many cases). So they do a good job for members and win the best deals, even in difficult circumstances.
GMB has networks of support for members at all levels:
Locally and regionally, in workplaces, union branches and at town and county hall
Nationally in Whitehall and Westminster, the Scottish Parliament, and the Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies
At European level via the GMB Brussels office and our membership of European trade union federations and the European TUC
