Working with teachers and partners

The GTC develops its advice through Members' consideration of evidence from teachers and education stakeholders, from its own research and that of others, and from the findings of GTC supported projects that involve teachers and others in testing out the advice that it provides Government. Policy analysis is undertaken based on this evidence and the core values of the Council and profession. In doing so the GTC aims to:

  • identify those aspects of policy which support and those which impede teaching and recommend policy changes
  • improve teachers and stakeholders' influence on education policy and lead debate
  • articulate the standards, values and professionalism of teaching
  • support professional knowledge on practice.

National policy

GTC advice is fundamentally concerned with the health and effectiveness of the profession and the capacity and opportunity for teachers' to fulfil their commitment to the achievement and life chances of young people. Therefore, it formulates policy solutions, advocates and secures them in national policy through advice to the Secretary of State, DfES, TTA, NCSL, QCA, OfSTED, LGA, LEAs and others. It also advises and seeks guidance from the education research and teacher education community and from parents, governors, equality bodies and business.

Developing guidance and local demonstration work
The GTC also offers direct support for teachers' practice and involvement in policy through guidance and support for local demonstration work and networks.
