The EMF Campaign
In 2005, a study funded by the Department of Health, the Draper Report, found that children living within 200 metres of high voltage power lines from birth had a 70% increased risk of developing childhood leukaemia.
It is not clear exactly what underlies this association. Close to the power line, the effect could be attributed to the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) emitted by the line.
Further out, it is less clear and we are funding a number of ongoing research projects which we hope will shed more light on this link between power lines and childhood leukaemia risk.
We want the Government to take a ‘precautionary approach’ and ban the building of new houses near high voltage power lines and new high voltage power lines near houses.
This will stop making the problem worse until we can gain more understanding of causation through research.
CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA have been campaigning for several years to raise awareness of this association and to gain support for a precautionary building ban.
The Government is considering the need for precautionary measures and was due to issue a statement on EMF and power lines by the end of 2008. Due to “a busy parliamentary timetable” no statement has yet been made.
