BCSC (British Council of Shopping Centres)

What is BCSC?

BCSC is the voice of the retail property industry, promoting retail-led regeneration and growth by producing top-level research and guidance, recognising achievement through awards, offering educational opportunities, facilitating dialogue with communities and the public sector and providing an extensive range of events and networking opportunities throughout the year.

The UK’s retail destinations are at the heart of local economies:

  • Investment within UK shopping centres has more than doubled since 2000
  • Town centre developments have seen the most marked growth in the last two years over out-of-town schemes
  • 500,000m² of retail floorspace will be built in 2008 with a further 486,000m² in the pipeline each year between 2009-2012
  • 7.6 million people are currently employed in the UK retail property industry, an increase of 37% since 1995
  • Retail-led employment within the UK set to grow by 3% over the next decade
  • Overseas investors have increased the value of their property purchases in the UK from £5bn to £20bn since 2000

Resources, dialogue and networking to support the public sector

BCSC engages with the public sector by contributing to public consultations, running targeted seminars and events, producing guidance and publishing research on all aspects of the retail environment.

BCSC is committed to facilitating strong relationships among its members, local authorities, and public partners; partnerships that are vital to bring about economically prosperous and sustainable communities. Our regional groups, seminars, conferences, networking events and education initiatives create opportunities for dialogue between BCSC members and local authority representatives.
