Babraham’s Science Strategy

Remit and Strategy of the Laboratories

The Laboratories of Developmental Genetics & Imprinting and Chromatin & Gene Expression

Remit: Research into the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms involved in gene regulation during development and the phenotypic action of these genes in specific systems.

Strategy: To understand the regulation of multigene clusters in, for example, immunoglobulin and imprinted genes by locus control, chromatin or DNA methylation.

Relevance: Contributes to Institute's mission through internationally competitive innovative research on the regulation of development pathways which allows understanding of the problems associated with deregulation and thereby of interest to the healthcare sector.

The Laboratory of Lymphocyte Signalling & Development

Remit: Research into the molecular and biochemical mechanisms involved in signalling and development inthe immune system.

Strategy: To understand functional relationships between receptors, ligands and signalling events and how receptor mediated signalling events regulate the development of immune cells and immune responses in adults.

Relevance: Contributes to Institute's mission through internationally competitive research into the molecular mechanisms of signalling and development in the immune system which has the potential to identify and validate novel sites for pharmaceutical interventions.

The Laboratory of Molecular Signalling and The Inositide Laboratory

Remit: Research into the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of major signalling pathways.

Strategy: To understand the function of pathways in cellular processes including fertilisation, cell proliferation, inflammation and cardiac contraction.

Relevance: Contributes to Institute's mission by delivering basic cell and molecular biological research of high international standing that creates new opportunities for exploitation by the commercial sector.

The Laboratory of Cognitive & Behavioural Neuroscience

Remit: Research into the brain's control of cognitive and reproductive functions at a behavioural and systems level.

Strategy: To understand the organisational and molecular mechanisms through which development, experience and ageing lead to change in brain function.

Relevance: Contributes to Institute's mission through innovative research of international standing on the mechanisms that regulate brain function and that are relevant for healthcare.
