afPE Spring Event

The afPE team would like to invite you to join us on 23rd April at the Royal Society of Arts, London for the afPE Spring Lectures.

We are honoured that these first afPE Spring Lectures will be delivered by two highly distinguished speakers: Baroness Estelle Morris, formerly Secretary of State for Education and Skills; and
Professor David Hargreaves, Director for Development at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust.

Baroness Estelle Morris

The Role of Physical Education in Contributing Towards Government Educational, Health and Sporting Targets

Baroness Morris will be best known to you as the former Secretary of State for Education and Skills, who restored positive relationships between the Government and the teaching workforce. The child of a political family, before entering parliament, Baroness Morris qualified as a teacher at Coventry College of Education, and taught at Sidney Stringer School and Community College from1974-1992. Before entering the Upper House as a Peer, she was Minister for the Arts. She holds honorary doctorates from Leeds Metropolitan University and the Universities of Wolverhampton and Bradford. She remains a prominent figure in the arts, education and children’s issues.

Professor David Hargreaves

A Future Direction for Government Policy for Education in Schools

Professor Hargreaves is Director for Development and Research at the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. Previously, Chief Executive of the QCA (appointed by Baroness Estelle Morris); Chairman of the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency; and Chief Inspector of the Inner London Education Authority. He has held academic posts in teacher education at the Universities of Manchester, Oxford and Cambridge. He is Visiting Professor of Education at the University of Manchester. Professor Hargreaves has also authored several books on educational theory and is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Cambridge and Foundation Academician of the Academy of the Social Sciences.
