Will The American Dream Turn Into A Japanese Style Nightmare?

    14 October 2008

At the end of the 1980’s the Japanese business model was conquering the world, and the Japanese economy appeared to be thriving, negligible unemployment, rising household wealth and then….

Expansion ran out of control and a combination of events and what are now regarded as a series of policy errors have led to a protracted period of deflation and low economic growth.

Could the US and perhaps the other major global economies be heading in the same direction? What are the similarities between Japan in the late 1980s and the US today and what, if any, are the differences?

In this months Fundamentals briefing Tim Drayson, Investment Strategist at Legal & General Investment Management will be examining these issues indicating where there are similarities (and differences) between Japan in the late 1980s and the US today and specifically comparing the regulatory and policy responses that we have seen so far in the States and comparing those to the action taken in Japan approximately twenty years ago.

This briefing will take place on WEDNESDAY 15 October at 12 noon at our office at One Coleman Street, EC2R 5AA. If you wish to come along and hear Tim’s presentation please call me on 020 3124 2096 or email steve.leach@lgim.co.uk.
