Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer: "The financial results of Northern Rock will illustrate a company on the right road for a gradual recovery. Unite is demanding that management now give the workforce a commitment about the security of their jobs. After the turbulence of the last yew years this is now well overdue.
"The chief executive must now focus on creating stability and protecting the remaining employees, for the long term interest of the organisation. For too long the staff have been on the bottom of the pile, but it is their hard-work and dedication which has kept Northern Rock afloat.
"As the largest private sector employer in the North-East workers in Northern Rock have coped with over two and a half years of change and seen the loss of thousands of colleagues. Remaining staff now need clarity in order to go on building a strong future for the organisation which they all remain committed too."
Before the financial crisis Northern Rock employed 6,500 staff across the country and there now remain only 4,500 staff.
