Press Release
Timetable for new equality law is crucial
Monday, July 21 2008
Reacting to the Government’s response to the Equality Bill consultation published today, Kate Jopling, Head of Public Affairs for Help the Aged, says, "Plans to make age discrimination illegal are a massive step forward, but this document is still short on crucial information about the timetable for implementation of the new law - particularly in the key areas of health and social care.
"We are promised a further announcement later in the year and this must set out clear and concrete steps to consign age discrimination to the history books. It is important to get the details of legislation right, but as every day goes by there are older people sitting in doctor's surgeries and in hospital beds without the guarantee of equal treatment. This situation cannot be allowed to continue."
