Teens and Toddlers wins DCSF funding

Teens and Toddlers a highly successful teenage pregnancy prevention and youth development intervention is set to become a National programme. The Children, Young People and Families Grant Programme has just awarded COUI UK £158,000 over 3 years, enabling them to recruit a National Development Manager to extend this unique programme and facilitate more local involvement in service design, training and project management.

The Teens and Toddlers Project identifies at risk teens and gives them work experience in a nursery environment. Here teens take responsibility for mentoring a vulnerable small child while being supported, through training and individual counselling, to gain a better understanding of the huge responsibility involved in having a child. Experienced facilitators help them develop communication skills, confidence and a positive outlook on life and understand more about sexual health and relationships.  98% of the participating young people receive an Accredited National Award in Interpersonal Skills.

For young men and women who experience poor relationships at home and in school and that are already caught in a spiral of poor educational attainment, attendance and low expectations for the future, becoming a parent can appear an attractive option to correct their deprived childhood, escape negative situations and to provide a new identity and purpose.

Youth development interventions like Teens and Toddlers provide a mix of experiential and classroom learning, alongside advice support and counselling to help raise the confidence, self-esteem and aspirations of vulnerable young people.  Improved interpersonal skills result in more positive relationships and an ability to present oneself to the world as competent and reliable.
