Press Release
Teacher's pay
9 July 2009
The National Union of Teachers, Europe's largest teaching union, welcomes the Government's confirmation today that teachers will receive pay increases of 2.3 per cent from 1 September 2009 and again from 1 September 2010.
General Secretary, Christine Blower, said:
"We are pleased that the Government has agreed to honour the long term pay settlement announced in 2008, and has also responded to the NUT's call for teachers' pay to be settled before the end of the school year. Teachers can now enjoy a well-earned break without worrying what their pay will be in September.
"Teachers' pay went up by less than inflation for four consecutive years, from 2005 to 2008. This pay increase does not reverse the pay losses that teachers have suffered over that period but at least it is a step in the right direction."
