Statistics User Forum welcomes Commons committee’s strong recommendations to improve population statistics
23 May 2008
The recommendations made by the Treasury Select Committee in its report “Counting the Population” published today, 23 May 2008, have been welcomed by the Statistics User Forum. The Forum is an umbrella body coordinated by the Royal Statistical Society and bringing together a wide range of groups representing users of statistics throughout the UK.
Forum chair, Keith Dugmore said:
“Users of population and migration statistics are very aware of the increasing difficulties in measuring a mobile population, and the need for improved measures.
“The Forum is very pleased to see the series of strong recommendations from the Treasury Committee. They support the case the Forum made for making more use of administrative files to create new statistics, the need for a definitive national address register for the 2011 Census, and for better mid year population estimates, including short-term migrants.
“The Forum urges the new UK Statistics Authority to rise to the challenge and ensure that government departments work closely and speedily with ONS to implement these vital improvements.”
