Statement in response to BMJ article on junior doctors working 91 hours a week

NHS Employers deputy director Alastair Henderson said: “The Royal College of Physicians survey and subsequent article in the British Medical Journal raises some important issues. The shift patterns that result in junior doctors working 91 hours over seven consecutive nights are legally acceptable under the European Working Time Directive and the hours do balance out to no more than 56 hours a week over a period.

However, we recognise that these shifts may not be the best way of addressing the balance between service requirements and the needs of junior doctors. There are a range of imaginative solutions that we would encourage trusts to look at, some of which were identified in the Hospital at Night project for different uses of medical and other staff skill mix.”
