School report card perceived by teachers as another layer of accountability

17 February 2010

Commenting on the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) Survey results on teachers' views on the proposed School Report Card, which shows that 37% are against it and 33% are unsure, Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union, said:

"The outcome of the Survey comes as no surprise. The Report Card is in its early stages of development with much of the detail still to be worked out.

"In that context, teachers who already feel overburdened by the school accountability regime will therefore, understandably and rightly, be reluctant to embrace what they clearly perceive as yet another measure being added to it and more pressure being heaped upon them.

"To gain teacher support for the Report Card, Ministers must make it clear that it will not place any additional burdens on individual teachers, that it will be a fair indicator of school performance across the whole range of school activity and that it will replace the outmoded and discredited performance league tables, which place schools and teachers under unacceptable and unnecessary pressure."
