Press Release
SATs
22 May 2008
Commenting on the National Association of Head Teachers’ call to make the 2008 SATs week the last, Christine Blower, Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Europe’s largest teaching union said;
“The House of Commons Select Committee Report’s call for the ending of the current high-stakes testing regime was a watershed. Assessment should be about learning, not about constructing misleading and unfair school league tables.
“I welcome therefore, the NAHT’s call to make this week’s SATs week the last.
“In the context of the NAHT campaign call, I have written to Mick Brookes and I will be writing to all other teacher organisation General Secretaries asking them if they will attend a meeting in order to explore how we can take the campaign forward to end the current testing regime.”
