Press Release
Rest of 'big six' should follow Scottish Power, says Which?
30 March 2009
In response to Scottish Power's announcement that it will compensate customers who overpay for gas and electricity through excessive monthly direct debits, Martyn Hocking, Editor, Which? magazine, says:
"With household budgets under pressure, it seems incredible that energy suppliers can effectively use their customers' money as 'interest-free loans', by setting direct debit payments too high and allowing balances of hundreds of pounds to build up.
"Now that Scottish Power has announced that it plans to compensate customers that are in this position, we hope to see the rest of the 'big six' play fair with customers and follow their lead. It's easy to switch supplier, so unhappy customers who feel they're being overcharged could vote with their feet."
