Regulator kits out MPs with charity tools
Tuesday, July 8 2008
On Tuesday 8 July the independent regulator of charities, the Charity Commission, is launching a new toolkit specifically designed for MPs and their staff at a parliamentary event.
The toolkit offers MPs advice on what to do when one of their constituents complains about a charity, providing a concise summary of the issues the regulator can – and can’t – look into. It includes practical factsheets covering issues such as charity collection scams, charities and politics and face-to-face fundraising.
The Commission will also be unveiling a new online search facility which will soon be available via its public affairs microsite. For the first time, MPs will be able to search for registered charities in a particular constituency and collate the contact details for these charities, providing them with a quick and easy way to get in touch with charities based in their constituency.
The event is being hosted by Alan Meale MP and will take place at the House of Commons.
The event will be addressed by Minister for the Third Sector, Phil Hope MP and Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Charity Commission. Charity Commission staff will be on hand to answer questions about specific charities or advise on general points about the Commission’s regulatory role.
Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Charity Commission said, "MPs often receive queries from their constituents about charities, be they village halls, local community services or national bodies. As the regulator of charities we felt that we could do more to help MPs and their staff respond to these queries and help their constituents understand more about charities. I hope that the launch of our toolkit and the new search facility on our online register will make it easier for MPs to navigate the diverse charitable sector."
The toolkit and constituency search will be available on the Commission epolitix microsite
