Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in the UK, has called for a complete overhaul of the inspection regime in response to a motion on OFSTED to be debated at the Union's Annual Conference in Bournemouth today.
Ms Keates said:
"The huge progress in raising standards of education is in spite of, and not because of, OFSTED.
"OFSTED stifles professional creativity and strips teachers and school leaders of the ability to use their professional judgement.
"Even more could be achieved with an effective system of inspection that both enables and supports schools in developing and applying diverse approaches to learning that are relevant to the children and young people in those schools.
"The proposals to develop a school report card raise obvious questions about the need for the continuation of league tables and OFSTED in its present form.
"Reform is long overdue and we must seize the opportunity to develop a fit for purpose inspection system."
