Red Cross on Autopsy: Emergency Room
31.10.2007
Thousands of people across the UK are being introduced to the science behind first aid thanks to Emma Rand, Red Cross project manager for first aid, who is appearing in a TV series this month with renowned anatomist Gunther von Hagens.
Emma is appearing on Autopsy: Emergency Room, a new Channel 4 series exploring the impact accidents and assaults have on the human body, and how first aid can make a life-saving difference.
Throughout the three-part series, Dr von Hagens will use real dead bodies, preserved using his ‘plastination’ technique, to show how various injuries harm the body. Using live models, Emma then demonstrates how first aid could be used to treat these injuries, often to life-saving effect.
First aid message
Emma said: “I wanted to take the opportunity to push out the first aid message in a very different forum than we would usually use.
“I hope we’ll reach an audience we wouldn’t normally have done and make first aid more accessible, easy to learn and even fun.”
The last two episodes of Autopsy: Emergency Room air on Channel 4 on 13 and 20 November at 11pm.
The first programme, which aired on 6 November, covered problems affecting the airway. To learn more about the life-saving techniques Emma demonstrates, read our first aid tips.
