Red Cross grants boost for UK flood recovery

13 March 2008

A second wave of British Red Cross grants is benefiting people recovering from last summer’s UK floods.

A further  £1 million, drawn from the charity’s UK Floods Appeal fund, is being made available to flood affected people across the country as communities continue to recover.

So far 15 local authorities have successfully applied and been awarded fresh grants.

The allocation follows the initial payment of British Red Cross grants totalling almost £3.5m made to 24 local authorities and their residents from October last year.

"Thanks to the extremely generous response of people both in the UK and indeed overseas we are able to once again offer help to those who continue to be affected by last summer’s floods," said Margaret Lally, head of UK service development at the British Red Cross.

“Many people continue to face difficulties resulting from the damage to their homes and livelihoods. We cannot respond to all the needs, but these grants can go a long way to alleviating the financial and emotional stress and worry the floods have caused.”

As with previous grants made from the Floods Appeal, money will be channelled through local authorities and partner charities to ensure money reaches those most in need.

Consultation was carried out with local authorities and charities to establish where need remained and how money from the appeal could be put to best use.

Previous grant payments have been used by individuals to help cover the cost of flood repairs and increased energy bills, and to replace vital goods such as fridges and freezers, as well as going towards community-wide projects.

The latest British Red Cross payments follow the government’s distribution of a further £1m in funding to communities affected by last summer's floods.

The Red Cross played a leading role in the response to the flooding across the UK, delivering food, water and hygiene kits to people in affected areas. Volunteers also provided help at rest centres for people who had been forced to leave their homes.
