Prestigious awards presented at the 2008 International Safety Awards banquet
Friday, May 16 2008
Top professionals from the sustainability, health and safety world came together for this year’s magnificent 50th International Safety Awards banquet held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, by the British Safety Council (BSC). The BSC presented hundreds of its member organisations with the coveted International Safety Awards, which are also acknowledged by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as a powerful motivator for achieving high safety standards.
The winners had to demonstrate a commitment to improving corporate health and safety. "You have all demonstrated that good health and safety provision makes good business sense" said Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the BSC in his speech to the guests. "The cost in 2007 to British industry from health and safety related incidents was £7.8bn. Safety first demonstrates a true feeling of caring, encouraging employees to work harder and remain loyal but importantly, it is also a demonstration of fiscal prudence."
And to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this prestigious and glamorous event, Nakheel, one of the world’s largest real estate development companies and the force that is turning the vision of Dubai into a reality, marked the occasion by sponsoring the very first 'British Safety Council - Nakheel International Award in Business Sustainability'.
The award was presented by Mr Abdulrahman Kalantar, Nakheel’s Managing Director for Design and Development, to Tata Chemicals. "It is our vision to inspire humanity by what we do and improvements in health and safety performance worldwide is a goal we all wish to achieve." said Mr Kalantar.
"It is because of this that we saw the British Safety Council as the ideal partner to create the British Safety Council – Nakheel International Award in Business Sustainability."
The award was accepted by Mr Anwar Hasan, Managing Director, Tata UK Limited who said “Tata affords the highest degree to the importance of health, safety and sustainability and this award is a manifestation of that. The award is also dedicated to all the employees of Tata Chemicals Limited who have made this possible. We would like to thank the British Safety Council for this award.”
As the event this year was the 50th banquet, the four course meal was followed with a thrilling line up of acts including indoor fireworks and a stunning cabaret. The banquet is the most stylish and spectacular safety awards ceremony in the UK and is regarded as the premier event for acknowledging commitment to improving health and safety performance.
