Opportunity to join Law Society delegation to world's largest legal conference

22 June 2009

The Law Society is leading a delegation of UK law firms to the premier event for lawyers – the International Bar Association conference in Madrid, Spain as interest in overseas work continues to grow in the profession.

The Society has joined up with UK Trade & Industry (UKTI) to lead a delegation of lawyers to the event in October which will see between 3,000-4,000 lawyers from more than 120 countries worldwide attending.

Law Society head of international, Alison Hook, says:

"We are seeing a surge in membership to the International Division at the moment, having recently signed up our 100th division member, which indicates firms are keen to have an overseas presence. If there is one overseas visit any law firm with an interest in international work should join it is this one. This is the largest gathering of the legal community in the world.

"The delegation will have access to seminars, meetings and networking events and will be able to promote their firm to others attending the conference. It provides a excellent opportunity for lawyers looking to generate business for their practice overseas."

The Society and UKTI have put together a programme which will support the delegates during the conference, which runs from October 4-9.

The programme includes:

A pre-conference briefing at the Law Society on how to make the most of the IBA conference.
An arrival briefing with the president of the Law Society, British Embassy staff from Spain and Portugal as well as regional commercial officers.
A networking event with Spanish firms.
A tailored briefing pack including a Spanish market profile and a guide to local firms. A profile in the widely distributed Law Society/UK Trade & Investment brochure.
A reception at the British Ambassador's residence with regional firms to which you can invite local contacts.
The deadline for applications to join the delegation is July 10.
