Press Release

Older people can offer the world to their communities

Wednesday, July 9 2008

Responding to the 'Communities in Control' White Paper, announced today by Communities Secretary Hazel Blears, Amy Swan, Policy Officer for Help the Aged, says, "Giving people more say in how their communities are run is in principle a good idea.  Older people routinely feel ignored by their local council (1) so we hope there are specific moves to include their opinions and years of experience.

"It’s vital that older people can play an active role in their communities and are able to ‘age proof’ policies, programmes and practice. Variations of initiatives targeted at young people such as the younger people’s advisers, could work well for older people.

"The Help the Aged ‘Towards Common Ground’ campaign, challenges central and local governments to create ‘lifetime neighbourhoods’, which cater for the needs of people of all ages, including older people."
