Press Release

NEIL RAMSEY APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF BUILDERS GROUP

26 June 2007

Neil Ramsey, chairman of North East general contractor Kendall Cross Holdings, has been appointed chairman of trade body the National Federation of Builders (NFB).

Neil, who was previously chairman of the Federation’s North East region, took over the national role from Jim Harrison at the NFB’s AGM on 26 June.

He has been involved in family-owned Kendall Cross Holdings for the last 18 years, overseeing a period of major expansion which has taken the firm from a local builder to a £27m turnover contracting business specialising in partnering.

Its projects include a five-year framework agreement with North Tyneside Council and several multi-million contracts with local housing associations and private sector clients.

Commenting on the appointment, Neil said: “Today’s construction industry is almost unrecognisable from the one I joined 18 years ago.

“One of the biggest advancements has been in the relationships between client and contractor, where a growing number of firms are moving away from old adversarial methods to partnering based contracting.

“The NFB has actively helped contractors like us embrace that change, ensuring we continue to play an active role in our chosen markets, specifically through training and advisory services.”

He added: “The industry continuing to witness unprecedented change – with newer issues like sustainability and zero carbon construction posing a challenge for thousands of firms. This is why the organisation is as relevant today as it was 18 years ago. Only by accessing dedicated support can the industry help to tackle these issues and evolve their businesses.”

Julia Evans, chief executive of the NFB, said: “Neil has been an active voice in the Federation for many years and we’re delighted by his appointment. The success story he has made of his own business – in adapting to the changing market place and prospering as a result – makes him a valuable exponent of the need for our industry to continually adapt.”

The NFB represents small and medium sized contractors in England and Wales. It recently reported its strongest set of financial results to date, delivering an eight per cent growth in sales to more than £3.5m for the 12 months to December 2006. It operates a regional network of seven offices and employs 40 staff.

The Federation, which was established 15 years ago, is the largest constituent member of the Construction Confederation. Its roots date back to the late 19th century when it was founded as one of the first employer’s organisations for construction.
