Press Release

National summit on developing skills for safer communities

1 April 2009

On Tuesday 7 April, senior figures from across the UK Justice sector will descend on London to discuss the importance of skills development within Justice. This means officials from Police Forces, Prisons, Courts, Forensic Science and many more will be looking at how developing the skills of their workforces can help to fight and reduce crime, and improve public confidence in the skills and ability of those who bring offenders to justice.

Taking place at the Hilton - Tower Bridge, Skills Summit 2009 is the only national event which brings together people from across all the Justice sector organisations, to focus on the need to work together and develop people, in order to fight crime and improve community safety.

Alan Woods OBE, Chief Executive of Skills for Justice will be delivering the keynote address on the importance of a highly skilled workforce in the Justice sector. He said:

"This summit is unique within the Justice sector, and represents a great opportunity for senior figures to discuss the latest developments, share information, and have an input into our work as we look to continue our role in developing skills for safer communities in 2009."

This year, Skills Summit will focus on a range of issues, such as, the challenge that organisations face in the current economic climate, the addition of UK Fire and Rescue Services into the remit of Skills for Justice, and the contribution of volunteers in the Sector.

There will also be several workshops, each with a specific focus, such as attracting the right people into job roles in Justice, why women don't get the top jobs in Justice, and how we can work together better to improve levels of care and support to offenders with mental health problems.
