Press Release
National Strategies to be dropped
26 June 2009
Commenting on the Government's decision to abandon national strategies in literacy and numeracy from 2011, Christine Blower, General Secretary, National Union of Teachers, Europe's largest teachers' union said;
"Many teachers will welcome the dropping of the top down imposed strategies, including the literacy hour.
"Ed Balls' recognition that teachers' professional judgement can be trusted to deliver the curriculum is long overdue. The Government needs now to accept and promote the same ethos for assessment.
"Putting trust back into the profession is essential; teachers know how to work together and how to share best practice amongst schools.
"The large sums of money freed up by the ending of the national strategies can now be spent on other more worthwhile aspects of the education budget. They must not get lost in the system".
