NASUWT challenges the Liberal Democrats to explain how their education policies will benefit pupils

20 September 2009

The NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in the UK, is jointly hosting, with the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), a fringe at each of the Party Conferences entitled 'Beyond the General Election: the Future of State Education.'

Minsters, shadow ministers and delegates will be debating what the future holds for state education.

Ed Balls, secretary of state for Children, Schools and Families, and shadow ministers Michael Gove and David Laws will be speaking at the fringes held at each of their respective conferences.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, said:

"Fully funded public services that are democratically accountable and held in trust for the public are at the heart just and inclusive society.

"It is clear that public services will be the battle ground for the General Election.

"These fringes will provide the opportunity for the NASUWT, ASCL and the main parties to lay out their vision for state education.

"The key test that the NASUWT will apply is whether the policies of the respective parties protect the values and ethos of public services, in particular state education."

Jerry Bartlett, deputy general secretary of the NASUWT, will be speaking on behalf of the NASUWT at the first of the fringes. He said:

"I will be sharing with Liberal Democrat delegates the Union's concerns that they key role played by public services, including education, during the world financial crisis must be recognised and supported.

"I will also be challenging David Laws to explain how his party's policy of expanding academies, increasing the freedoms and autonomy of schools and introducing more flexibility at school level to teacher's pay and conditions of service will benefit either the state service or children and young people."
