A new easy to use guide to assist people with learning disabilities who want to live more independently to plan for the future is being launched today (25th November). Available in print and online (www.making-money-easier.info) Moving on and Planning Ahead has been produced by the national disability charity, United Response in partnership with the learning disability umbrella body ARC and funded by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).
Produced in an easy read format, Moving on and Planning Ahead, which will be officially launched at the national Learning Disability Today exhibition in London, covers a range of topics including what it means to live independently, putting together a plan for independence, paying for support and accessing the benefits that you are entitled to.
Su Sayer, chief executive of United Response said:
"Having the freedom to choose whom we live with and how we spend our time is a right that everyone should have. Yet many disabled people have found themselves excluded from these decisions, preventing them from living independently. Thankfully things are changing and with the Government's commitment to increase the opportunities for disabled people to take control of their lives, living independently is becoming more of a reality.
"There are now many more options available to people, but understanding them all and weighing up what works best for you can be difficult. We hope that the Moving on and Planning Ahead guide will make it easier for people to find out about the support available to them and how to access it."
Moving on and Planning Ahead is part of Making Money Easier – a series of guides produced by United Response and ARC which aim to make information about money, banking and independence easier to understand for people with learning disabilities and anyone who may benefit from accessible financial information. The Moving on and Planning Ahead guide has been funded by the FSA as part of the National Strategy for Financial Capability.
Chris Pond, Director of Financial Capability at the FSA said:
"Managing your money is a challenge for most people, but when you have a learning disability it's even more of a challenge. The work of United Response and ARC in preparing the 'Moving On and Planning Ahead' booklet is a significant step forward in helping people with learning difficulties towards independence. We are pleased to have been able to fund this important initiative."
