London First response to Tube modernisation costs announcement

In response to this morning's determination by the Tube Arbiter of the costs for the next phase of Tube upgrade, business group London First called for the arguing to stop, and for management attention to focus on delivering more frequent and more reliable Tube services.

Baroness Jo Valentine, London First chief executive said:

"It is absolutely right that the Mayor and Transport for London get the best possible value for taxpayers from the Tube PPP. But let no-one be under the illusion that nationalising Tube Lines would be cheaper. The independent PPP Arbiter has confirmed that managing the Metronet contracts in-house has not delivered the claimed efficiency savings.

"It's time for expensive and pointless squabbling to end and the next phase of the Tube modernisation to begin. It is vital for London and particularly to the seven million passengers who use the Northern and Piccadilly lines every week. They were promised more capacity and more reliability from 2012, and they won't thank Tube Lines, Transport for London or the Mayor if those improvements are delayed."
