Following this afternoon's announcement by ministers that there is a need to economise use of the nation's salt supplies by between 40 and 50 per cent, Cllr David Sparks, chair of the Local Government Association Transport and Regeneration Board, said:
"Councils will keep working night and day so people can make essential journeys to get food and medical care. Tough decisions will be made to ensure key roads are kept clear so people can get to hospitals, schools and the shops.
"The whole country is seeing the worst cold weather in 30 years and we need to work together to conserve salt stocks. People should take even greater care on the road and check their council's website for which roads are being gritted. The safety of the travelling public is vitally important and this will be reflected in the measures councils take to conserve salt."
