LGA responds to government proposals for safeguarding adults

Responding to the announcement that Safeguarding Adults Boards will be introduced across the country, Cllr David Rogers, chair of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, said:

"Protecting vulnerable adults is just as important as protecting vulnerable children. Councils know this, but it is useful to see this message being given a prominence by government which will keep it at the front of people's minds.

"Keeping people safe is not work councils can do alone, and good co-operation with the health service, police and voluntary groups is vital if potential abuse is going to be spotted and nipped in the bud before major harm can be done.

"Boards to safeguard children are now a key part of child protection policy, and it will be useful to learn from this approach so more adult versions can be established which are as effective as possible while avoiding unnecessary bureaucracy."
