‘INCREASING RELEVANCE’ HELPS NFB DELIVER RECORD FINANCIAL RESULTS
26 June 2007
The National Federation of Builders (NFB) – the principal trade body for small and medium sized contractors in England and Wales – has reported its strongest set of financial results to date, saying the figures demonstrate its ‘increasing relevance to the industry’s SME sector’.
In the year to December 2006, the NFB showed an eight per cent growth in sales to more than £3.5m.
The Federation, which operates a regional network of seven offices and employs 40 staff, also generated a record surplus (profit) of £295,000.
While net membership figures remained in line with the previous year, NFB said the growth had come from a rising number of companies joining at the higher turnover bands of membership, as well as an increasing revenue stream from its increasing focus on the provision of business and bespoke training.
Speaking at the NFB’s Annual General Meeting in Newcastle, chief executive Julia Evans said: “Involved and supportive members and our dedicated members of staff have helped the NFB deliver another confident financial performance in 2006.
“This renewed strength will enable the NFB to continue investing to deliver improved services, an expanding regional network and a more effective policy operation.”
So far this year, the Federation has made a number of key appointments, including a new director for its Welsh division and a new head of sales and marketing.
The NFB has also run several high profile policy campaigns. These included its report into the connections services provided to contractors by utilities companies, which highlighted widespread poor practice leading to delays and penalties for the industry. Its efforts led to new guidelines to be published by energy regulator Ofgem earlier this year which threaten fines for those utilities who fail to meet certain standards.
The Federation, which was established 15 years ago, is the largest constituent member of the Construction Confederation. Its roots date back to the late 19th century when it was founded as one of the first employer’s organisations for construction.
