ICSA reissues whistleblowing guide
10 July 2007
The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) has today reissued its best practice guide on whistleblowing. The original guide was published in 1999, following the enactment of the Public Disclosure Act 1998 (PIDA). The aim of the guide is to assist employers in setting up an appropriate procedure for employees to ‘blow the whistle’ if they are concerned about serious misconduct at work. It outlines the essential elements of an internal whistleblowing procedure and provides a model procedure that can be adapted for use within an organisation.
The new version has been revised and updated to reflect recent legislation such as the Terrorism Act and the Proceeds of Crime Act and is being reissued in response to the increasing pressure for organisations to have a whistleblowing policy in place. Having such a procedure in place is now seen as a crucial element in corporate governance and risk management strategy since it helps organisations identify risks that they may be unaware of and encourages employees to speak out if they have concerns. The guide also includes useful contact details for organisations such as Public Concern at Work, the Audit Commission, the Committee on Standards in Public Life and the Information Commissioner’s Office.
A copy of the new best practice guide can be obtained for £10 from the ICSA Information Centre on 020 7612 7035 or by e-mailing informationcentre@icsa.co.uk
