HULL BUILDER AWARDED FOR CONSTRUCTING EXCELLENCE

15 June 2007

Hull-based construction firm, Robinson & Sawdon Ltd, has received a prestigious industry prize at the Constructing Excellence Awards.

The ceremony, which took place at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on 12th June 2007, recognises exceptional business drive within the construction industry, and a commitment to people development which brings long-term commercial benefits.

Based on English Street in Hull city centre, Robinson & Sawdon was named best firm for ‘Leadership and Management’ across Yorkshire and Humber.

Robinson & Sawdon was founded in 1921, offering construction services and specialist joinery for projects ranging from £10,000 to £5 million in value.

Since managing director James Deacon bought the company in 2006, the business has seen turnover increase by 300% and headcount rise from 43 to over 80.

Over the last year, James has also launched a personal development initiative for staff based on a comprehensive training programme and the launch of a new employee best standard charter.

James Deacon was nominated for the award by leading construction trade body, the National Federation of Builders (NFB).

Angela Dyrdal, Regional Services Manager at the NFB in the North East, said: “Utilising the skills of employees is crucial to progressing within the construction industry, but doing so requires commitment to bringing about change.”
James Deacon, managing director of Robinson & Sawdon, said: “This award is a fantastic outcome and follows a year of hard work by ourselves and organisations such as the NFB and ConstructionSkills to introduce business improvement strategies to benefit our customers and employees.

“Robinson & Sawdon’s ethos has always been based on exceeding clients’ expectations. By increasing interaction with our staff, we are now also fulfilling this ethos internally.

“Diversification of the firm will be key to our future and help distinguish us in a busy marketplace. Utilising the ambitions and skills of our staff is an ideal starting point, but that is only possible if we listen to our employees and encourage their development.”
