Revalidation project update

The Council discussed an outline of further work on the issues around revalidation.

Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) performance review

The Council discussed the CHRE's review of HPC's performance during 2008/09.

Application for the regulation of sonographers from the Society and College of Radiographers

The Council gave further consideration to the application for sonographers to be regulated by HPC, which was previously considered in 2008. Whilst Council agreed to write to the Secretary of State for Health recommending a form of regulation of the aspirant profession, it was agreed that those issues requiring further exploration would be conveyed to the Secretary of State, the text of which would be submitted to Council for consideration at its next meeting.

Application for the regulation of genetic counsellors from the Association of Genetic Counsellors and Nurses

The Council discussed the application for genetic counsellors to be regulated by HPC and agreed to invite the Association of Genetic Counsellors and Nurses to a future meeting of Council to do a presentation on their application.

Extending professional and occupational regulation

In July 2009, the Department of Health published the report of the Extending Professional Regulation Working Group. The Council discussed the working group's recommendations but felt that this important issue should be discussed in more detail at the Council Strategy meeting scheduled for February. In the meantime, Committees would consider those issues contained within the report pertinent to their remit.
